Q & A with the founder of karen bennett photography

Where is your business based?

My business, Karen Bennett Photography, is based in Brimpton, West Berkshire, where you’ll find our home-studio. However, we take many of our photos on location around the UK.

Tell us about your business. Where did it all begin?

It really all started when I was given a camera as a gift years ago. I practiced my skills on my very patient dog, Bugsy, whilst following an online photography course. As a creative person with a love for animals, the idea dawned on me that this passion could become my livelihood… Karen Bennett Photography was born! I still spend a huge amount of my time with Bugsy, who is probably the most photographed dog in Berkshire!

What does your business offer? What is its USP?

I capture the love, bond, trust and joy people share with their animals through still moments.  My photography is a record of a memory, compacted with love, emotion and joy.  I work with all my customers closely, to capture that bond. I often join their daily life with their animals, creating a much more relaxed environment for everyone involved, and often a truer result in the images. I also run studio shoots if preferred, its just a matter of which environment my customers would most like to be captured in.

I also offer Equine photography and Equine wall art, which capture these stunning animals, and accentuate their expressions combined with emotion and impact.

What are your plans for the business for 2022?

2022 is now about getting seen! I’m looking for spaces to exhibit and I’m also aiming to hold an exhibition locally of my fine art photography framed prints.

How do you find being a small independent business owner? Do you have any tips for business owners striving to do the same?

I love being a small business! It allows me to give great customer service. I am solely in control of my business, the materials I use, the styling of the images and the type of work I want to focus on. For anyone looking to start this journey, a few tips: Always respond positively and quickly to enquiries. If it doesn’t fit your model don’t do it. Stick with your vision and your gut feeling. Find yourself a coach or mentor who understands you and your journey.

Anything else you’d like readers to know?

I’m passionate about horses, but I also love to support people.  Over ten years ago I found an amazing opportunity to combine these passions as a volunteer at Newbury Riding for the Disabled. I am thrilled to say that I am still a regular there to this day.
